REAR BRAKE SHOES Replacement

1. With the rear of the car jacked up and safely supported on stands, remove the road wheels. 2. Release the handbrake and slacken off the rear shoe adjuster. Remove the two brake drum securing screws and withdraw the brake drum. 3. Release the brake shoes from the adjuster wedges and then from the wheel cylinder . Disengage the handbrake operating lever from the shoes and remove the brake shoes together with their return springs. 4. Fit an elastic band or suitable clamp over the wheel cylinder to retain the pistons in position. 5. Clean out the brake drum and backplate using a soft brush. Check for any signs of oil, grease or brake fluid contamination. If any of these are present, the cause must be established and dealt with before fitting new brake shoes. Grease or oil can be cleaned off with petrol or paraffin; brake fluid should be removed using methylated spirits. 6. Check that brake shoe adjuster spindle turns freely in the backplate, and that the adjuster wedges are free to slide in the adjuster body. Apply a small amount of suitable grease to the adjuster spindle threads, the adjuster wedges, the support points on the tips of the new brake shoes, and sparingly to the brake shoe support pads on the backplate. 7. Before fitting the brake shoes, check that the handbrake operating lever is free to pivot on its link, and apply a small amount of grease around the pivot point. 8. If required, the link and lever can be removed from the backplate after disconnecting the handbrake cable from the lever. Disengage the rubber dust boot from the backplate and from the lever and remove the lever and link assembly. The assembly is not to be taken apart. 9. Remove the elastic band or clamp from the wheel cylinder. Position the new brake shoes on the backplate as shown in , and fit the lower return spring. Ensure that the connecting wire between the spring coffs is downwards otherwise it will rub on the rear hub in use. Locate the handbrake lever in the shoes and fit the shoes onto the wheel cylinder. 10. Fit the upper return spring between the appropriate holes in the shoe webs and lift the shoes into position on the adjuster wedges. 11. Check that the handbrake link and lever are correctly engaged in the shoe webs, and that the mechanism operates the shoes in the correct manner then install the brake drum. 12. Finally, adjust the brake shoes as detailed in the ROUTINE MAINTENANCE section.
